This is an example of a synchronous condensing unit with the LM6000 GT which has a separate starter and thus the gas turbine is able to start without stopping the generator from synchronous condensing operation. Two out of a total of seventeen units installed by GE are at PSE & G Plant at Kearney, New Jersey. Aside from normal peak load power generation such units can provide power factor and voltage support, rotating inertia to stabilize the local grid system, especially if electrical loads change quickly. The SSS Clutch installed between the 43,000 kW gas turbine and the synchronous condensing generator allows the units to be started and online within 14 minutes, thus qualifying the power plant for spinning reserve services.
