ESKOM, South Africa

This example, located in Gourikwa, is one of seven synchronous condensing units installed in South Africa in 2006. The SSS Clutch with casing is installed between the 150 MW peak-load gas turbine SGT5-2000E (V94.2) and the synchronous condensing generator. In addition to supplying needed peak load capacity in the Western Cape Province, the duty of the oil fuelled peak load plant is to stabilize electricity supply to the province by supporting the existing grid network. The units operate mainly in synchronous condensing mode and generate power for only a few hours daily.
